Why GA4 labels your paid Google Ads traffic "(organic)." The mechanism Google documented in a table nobody reads. How to check your account. And the fix.
This guide covers Google Ads auto-tagging (gclid) without UTM parameters. Verified on a real enterprise GA4 property: 11.7% of Paid Search sessions showed this pattern.
What's inside
Each section explains one part of the problem. By the end, you know exactly what GA4 does with your paid traffic and how to take control back.
01
You paid for the click. Session source/medium says google/cpc. Manual source/medium says google/organic. Same session. Two answers.
02
GA4 runs two parallel attribution systems. Session dimensions read from GCLID. Manual dimensions read from UTMs. No UTMs? Referrer fallback. google.com = organic.
03
Five dimensions. One filter. If Session manual campaign name shows "(organic)" next to google/cpc, you have this pattern.
04
Your agency names campaigns differently than your reports need them. Without UTMs, manual dimensions fall back to referrer. You lose control of both sides.
05
Add UTM parameters alongside auto-tagging. Auto-tagging wins for source/medium. utm_campaign fills what GCLID cannot resolve. There is no "allow manual tagging to override auto-tagging" setting in GA4. That was Universal Analytics.
